How antibacterial soaps and cleaners could make you VERY sick

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” is an oft quoted maxim that I personally feel is true.  However, when applied to bacteria the results are stronger bugs that may be resistant to treatment.

The common use of ‘antibacterial’ products in the home introduces enormous amounts of the chemicals that were previously only used in hospitals and labs.  These chemicals, while very effective at killing bacteria, don’t kill it all.  That this left behind contributes to the production of resistant strains of bacteria.  These strains have also been shown (in the lab) to be resistant to the most common treatments for bacterial infections.

The result is that we are contributing to the evolution of drug-resistant forms of bacteria through our use of anti-bacterial products in our homes.

Stick with soap and water; it is just as effective and does NOT contribute to super-bugs.

Belagio Glass Flower Ceiling

The lobby of the Belagio Hotel in Las Vegas has a HUGE glass flower sculpture on its ceiling. This installation includes over 2000 individually blown pieces by artist Dale Chihuly.

To take this shot I had to lay on my back and shoot straight up; I got lots of weird looks. 😉

The Belagio site has some more info. and the artist can be found here.

I’ve posted several other shots from that trip, the first with the new camera, on Flickr.

Is this the party to whom I am speaking?

I vascillate between being incredibly paranoid (I shreaded my cereal boxes only that one time!) and sharing quite a bit about myself online.  For example, you can find my picture various places online but you won’t find my street address, phone number, etc.

But most people don’t know just how much Google knows about them.

For example, you can find a phone number for most folks by entering their last name and zip code.  If you’re like me and rather not have people Google your phone number they have thoughtfully provided a method for you to remove it.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to adjust my tin-foil hat… Those pesky aliens are trying to tell me that Paris Hilton is hot again.

You know you’re a regular when…

I drink a lot of Starbuck’s. By ‘a lot’ I mean 2 or 3 venti (roughly bucket size) non-fat, no whip, mocha lattes a day. There is a Starbuck’s ‘dealer’ about 20 steps from my office door so it’s very easy to scratch the itch.

So this morning I walk in and the line is literally out the door, as usual. As I’m queued up, still about 6 people away from placing my order, one of the nice folks with the aprons comes out from behind the counter and hands me my drink.  “Here ya go Tim!”.

Evelyn is my new hero.

Stupid like you read about…

Along with about a third of the population of North America we planned to travel this holiday season. In our case it meant a trip to Kalamazoo MI for a gathering of the clan, the first in over 2 years. We booked the flights several weeks ago optimizing for cost over schedule. As a result we were booked on a 6AM flight.

I’ve been traveling a fair bit recently, Chicago and LA this month alone, so when the time came to drive to the airport, 3:30AM thank you very much, I was on auto-pilot. Of course, we scheduled this flight long before we knew my company party would be happening the night before, nor that L’s company party would be the night before that. Needless to say we were zombies.

We make great time; arrive at the off-airport parking lot, hop in the shuttle, bounce our way to the terminal and queue up with the other zombies waiting to check in. We pounce on a ‘self check-in kiosk’ and jam the credit card in to get our reservation. Hmm… nothing found. No worries, I’ll just enter in the destination airport code, AZO. Double-Hmm… nothing found. I enter the confirmation number – bzzzt! No check in for you! Now, I’m worried. Continue reading Stupid like you read about…
