Grandfather Floor Clock Interior Lighting – Breadboard

The first step was to test the LED strip control circuit.  I’m using a TIP120 here; they are not as efficient as a MOSFET but they have sufficient current capacity for this application and were already at hand.  The resistors are both 1k ohm 1/4 watt.clk-led-control-p1_bb Continue reading Grandfather Floor Clock Interior Lighting – Breadboard

A very sad day indeed. I’ve enjoyed his work immensely and will greatly miss his cameos on the current ST movie series.

Mr. Spock’s, values, outlook and insights have contributed to the person I became. Reason over emotion, knowledge over ignorance and understanding over dogma; ideals ingrained in Mr. Spock and ones I wish to embody myself.

But dude, a singing career?  Seriously?  What were you thinking? Bad move Space Cadet. http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-way-i-feel-mw0000997017

Grandfather Floor Clock Interior Lighting – Design Choices

I had several goals in mind for the project:

  • Light is active only at night
  • Must have manual on/off switch
  • Only active if there are people present
  • Light source not visible when the light is off

I chose an Arduino Uno as the controller.  I have a few of them around and have wanted to find an appropriate project to give them a try. Continue reading Grandfather Floor Clock Interior Lighting – Design Choices

DIY LED light ring for Canon PowerShot camera

My partner sells a lot on eBay and she takes lots of pictures to include in the listings.  She prefers to use our Canon PowerShot SX230 HS over my Nikon DSLR.  It is easier to handle and much easier to operate.  But the flash, like most on-camera flashes, is awful.

A typical light ring attaches to a camera around the lens to create a ‘halo’ of light.  The idea is to project the light onto the subject perpendicular to the lens to reduce visible shadows.   They are most often used in macro photography but are useful whenever the subject is close to the camera.  They can be purchased for as little as $20 but why buy it when you can build it! Howard Miller Contemporary Grandfather Floor Clock image
Sorry for the reflections. My polarizing filter didn’t remove all of them.

Shortly after we bought our house we did what many new homeowners do — we went to a home show!  As we wandered among the booths showing off bathtub enclosures, paving stones and replacement windows I spotted a display of grandfather clocks.

I have fond  childhood memories of an ornate mantle clock in my grandparent’s home.  Many a night I fell asleep to the slow, rhythmic sounds of the mechanism.  I’ve always wanted a clock like that but was put off by the dark, staid, overly ornate, and frankly boring design of most grandfather clocks.  This booth was full of those but one in particular caught my eye.
